The brief

Bite PGH connects Pittsburgh residents with local, independent and underrepresented-owned businesses, and its directory is the heart of the site. Businesses apply, details change and listings go stale, and standard directory plugins did too little or buried the work in settings nobody had time to learn.

What we built

Wrote a custom WordPress plugin instead of bending an off-the-shelf directory.
Built the public directory with keyword search, instant filters for category, ownership and zip code, and grid or list views.
Built a public form where businesses add themselves; each entry waits in an approval queue with a count badge in the admin sidebar.
Made all four classification lists editable, so categories can be renamed or retired without a developer.
Added spreadsheet import that previews what will be added, changed or skipped before writing, plus a full export.
Built check-ins and a leaderboard for the Summer of Local rewards program, and wrote a plain-language manager's guide.
